How It All Began

Their language, now known as Old English, sounded very different from modern English and would be almost impossible for us to understand today.

Later, history continued to shape the language. The Viking invasions brought Norse words like sky, egg, and window. In 1066, the Norman Conquest introduced French into English society, adding thousands of words related to law, art, food, and government. This blending of languages made English richer and more flexible.

From Shakespeare to Global English

By the time of Shakespeare, English had entered a new phase — Early Modern English. Shakespeare himself contributed hundreds of words and expressions still used today, proving that creativity plays a huge role in language development.

The global expansion of the British Empire later spread English across continents. As it reached new cultures, English adapted, absorbing local words and accents. This is why today we have British English, American English, Australian English, and many other variations — all correct, all alive.

Why English Keeps Changing

One of the most fascinating things about English is that it never stops evolving. Technology, social media, and globalization constantly introduce new words and expressions. Terms like streaming, emoji, and AI are now part of everyday language, showing how English grows with the world.
